News letter 23/09/2013

The community centre has requested a 50% increase on our current rent. We are unable to pay that amount as we don’t make that much each week in donations and the kitchen combined. We have offered to reduce the amount of time we use the center as part of a compromise however the outcome is yet to be agreed and it is very important that you keep an eye on emails to ensure you know if opening times change. In the meantime please consider donating £2 or more each week when you come to group, the donations box is by the signing in book.

Activities are being prepared for our Christmas party and children are putting together a panto with Ianna, as usual we will have a showcase where all the children will be able to show us their talents so get them practising. There will of course also be a tombola and a raffle so please bring donations along for either. This event is always very popular with the children and parents alike and we invite family and friends along to admire our children’s talents and of course help fundraise. All donations are acceptable including new toys, tins of food, bottles of pop or wine, pickles etc.

Recycling, every week now we are rummaging through the bins sorting out the rubbish from the recycling. Can everyone please take 5 minutes to familiarise themselves with the bins in the building. The blue bag is for cans, glass and paper etc, black bin for items that can not be recycled and there is a large green bin for food waste. Please make sure you talk to the children/ teens about this as we have received complaints from the council and the community centre.

GCSE classes are now under way and a small amount of children are also studying subjects at ks3 with a tutor. If this is successful this year then it may be offered more formally next year. If you think this might be of interest to you please let us know via email including the age of the child and the subjects they are interested in. Please also let us know if you are interested in GCSE’s for next year.

Membership cards are being discussed as a possibility for teenagers, they have caused a little bit of a rucus on some email lists due to the suggestion that they could have the S.W. Police logo on them. The logo would mean that the police would have to be trained in the laws applying to home education most importantly they would know that home educated children are not the target of truancy sweeps. If you would like to give any feed back on this idea please email newfoundationshe@virginmedia.com.

Our allotment is going well and we now have a fully functional shed, a bed full of strawberry plants 2 small beds that have been used to grow summer salad along with pumpkins and courgettes. We have now added a 3 meter bed in which we have been planting winter cabbage, broccoli and red and white onions. We have so far taken nearly around 40 bags of glass and rubble from the site and hope to have it safe for our younger members to use by next summer. Thanks to a donation of pallets collected from a local building site the large bed was made for free and fence panels are being constructed to separate our allotment from the surrounding ones.

The Christmas physics lectures this year are being held on Wednesday the 14th December in Cardiff University and are aimed at 14 – 16 year olds. The booking form is to be posted Friday this week so if you have a teen who wants to attend let me know ASAP.

As Christmas approaches many of you will buy items from Amazon online. If you go to our web site and click on the amazon logo you will be taken to the Amazon site and we will earn commission from your purchases. You will not be charged for this and all funds raised will go back into provisions for the group.

On November the 15th Bridgend group is having a space themed day. They have been able to borrow Nasa’s lunar rocks and meterorites.  Valuable samples of moon rock and soil were brought back to Earth by NASA’s Apollo astronauts. STFC is the only authorised source for the loan of this precious material to educational or scientific organisations within the UK. Because of the security around the samples and the fact that they’re irreplaceable we are not allowed to advertise that were borrowing them on our website page or send out any robin emails, but we are allowed to put it in a newsletter or use word of mouth.

They also hope to have members of Bridgend Astronomy Society at the group that day to see the samples and chat with the children and answer any questions.

Activities coming up

Next week we will be having a trial recorder lesson with Imogen keep an eye on the time table to confirm the time. If all works well we hope this will be a regular lesson.

Having thought about the Christmas play we are now inviting parents to join in to make it a home ed collaboration.

Christmas crafts include making reindeer from a jigsaw puzzle and making mince pies

We will of course have a Christmas party when children will be invited to show case their best talents.

Our allotment is now open and making progress, we have been given a shed which is waiting for some perspects for the windows.

We have various offers of compost and we have some pallets that are making a boundary fence and have purchased some wood to make raised beds.

We are meeting at the allotment every Monday 11am to 2pm and are working on another day when we can also meet there. Everyone is welcome however due to the hazards at the site children over 10years only. We are also asking for 2litre pop bottles to make an environmental greenhouse with and old bins buckets and tubs to collect water in.
